Presentation of The Huntington

The Huntington is a big park in San Marino (California), near Los Angeles, bought and created by the businessman Henry E. Huntington in 1902. In the beginning of the 20th century, it was called the "San Marino Ranch". The park of his residence was opened to the public in 1928 and approximately 600 000 people come to visit it every year.

In this park, there are various gardens with plants from everywhere around the world.

For example, you have the Japanese Garden, with a moon bridge, Japanese house, and colorful fish in a pond. It was created in 1911, that makes it the oldest of this kind in the USA.

Always in Asian theme, there is the Chinese Garden, also called "Liu Fang Yuan" or "Garden of Flowing Fragrance". It's a recent garden : its creation began in 2000. You can find again several bridges, a lake and traditionnal chinese pavilions.

The Rose Garden is older than the Japanese Garden: it was created in 1908 and it is showing the history of the rose over 2000 years, with 1200 different varieties of this flower.

Next, there are also the Jungle Garden, the Desert Garden, the Australian Garden... But we can't describe each here, it would take too much time.

In mid of all these gardens, there are some buildings with incredible exhibitions : European art collection, American art galleries, Library exhibition, History of Science exhibition. One of these pavilions was although the villa of Henry E. Huntington. We will see the collections of the Huntington with more details later in this blog.
